Harry Potter Magical Double Feature in New York City

Harry Potter Books
If you love the books you love the double feature at The New York Historical Society.

Magic Times 2

Welcome fellow NYC and international PotterHeads of PotterMania. It’s none other than SpaceMan here. And I’m not only a Harry Potter fan but I myself practice the art of conjuring in another life. So imagine my excitement when I learned there is a place that has the best of both of my worlds: one aspect being Potterdome and the other legerdemain!

I am speaking of course about “Harry Potter: A History of Magic” that is cohabitating with the “Summer of Magic” program. Where? It goes without saying that both exhibits are occurring at The New York Historical Society at 170 Central Park West, New York, NY, (212) 873-3400. Also, here’s the website for more information.

I give you the necessary information up front because if you, like me, are interested in seeing BOTH exhibits, you’ll have to act quickly. Though Harry Potter will be around until January 27, 2019, the “Summer of Magic” happening is going to be leaving us, well, just like summer on September 16. Yes, disappearing. Poof!

Harry Potter Fun

Harry Potter I must admit is what I am most excited to see. I have heard it is wonderful. It is described as a journey to where magic and myth began! And as every wizard knows, 2018 marks the 20th anniversary of the United States publishing of “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.”

As stated in The New York Historical Society’s website celebrate the landmark, the Historical Society brings us an exhibit committed to…

“…Capturing the traditions of folklore and magic at the heart of the Harry Potter stories, Harry Potter: A History of Magic unveils century-old treasures including rare books, manuscripts, and magical objects from the collections of the British Library and New-York Historical Society—with original material from Harry Potter publisher Scholastic and J.K. Rowling’s own archives. From medieval descriptions of dragons and griffins to the origins of the sorcerer’s stone, explore the subjects studied at Hogwarts and see original drafts and drawings by J.K. Rowling as well as Harry Potter illustrator Jim Kay.”

The showing also boasts of such things as the first recorded mention of “abracadabra,” as a cure for malaria, in Quintus Serenus, Liber Medicinals. Courtesy the British Library Board. Neat!

And Then There’s the Second Attraction, in this Double Feature

According to The New York Historical Society’s website you can experience magic at…

“…Summer of Magic: Treasures from the David Copperfield Collection” June 15 – September 16. Travel to New York’s magical past and discover a world of treasures from the collection of Emmy Award-winning illusionist David Copperfield. Explore the careers and exploits of the legendary magicians that inspired him, see iconic objects used by Harry Houdini, and be amazed by the Death Saw from one of Copperfield’s most famous illusions!”

And Before I Vanish Just Like “Summer of Magic” Which I Will be Doing Soon, I’d Like to Thank Those of You Who Contacted Me Regarding…

…Liking the fact that we’ve added a blog to our format with our first post being called “A New Magical Direction” and our second entry in July entitled “Harry Potter Fan Clubs and More.”

And since a part of what this blog is about is visits from the Manhattan Magician and any other wizards who want to share with us their own original magic creations, we wish to congratulate Manhattan Magician on a recent post to his blog. The post has a long title which is “Manhattan Magician’s List of 5 Manhattan Magicians Who All Perform in, Where else, Manhattan, NY, New York City, The Big Apple, NYC, also known as The City that Never Sleeps.”

The blog entry, just as the title describes, details five talented finger flingers who perform in our terrific city.

Kudos also go out to the Manhattan Magician for being accepted as a card carrying member (it actually says “Manhattan Magician” on his membership card) of the Society of American Magicians. And since MM is in New York, in September he’ll be attending meetings at the very first chapter of S.A.M. that was once presided over by Harry Houdini himself!

All right then. It’s time for SpaceMan to dematerialize…
